Vitamin D

Innards

I was certain I had just recently posted on the Vitamin D deficiency prollem that currently plagues the populace, but damned if I can find it.  No matter.

Because we Americans seldom go outside anymore without sun screen, and because we are not drinking much vitamin D enriched milk, it's been determined that we're largely deficient in Vitamin D, which leads to a variety of ailments.  My physician said he was screening all his patients, and would I like a go?  Sure, but I told him I take a good daily vitamin, and a calcium magnesium supplement which contains vitamin D., so would prolly be okay.   I took the blood test and received the result yesterday.

The supplement is "vitamin d 50,000 unit capsule Qty 20 SIG: 1po per week."

Carry on.

What about that calcium fizz drink you've used and recommended, Dr. S.H. Long?

Sounds like it could be a Guido line: Yo. I slipped her some of the old vitamin D know whaime talking bout?

Gee Rodger, that last line reminds me of an old farm story. It seems a farmer was showing his prize bull to his city cousins. "He services three cows a day, everyday" the farmer said. The wife poked her husband and said "Wow, three times a day!" The husband smiled and said, "It's a different cow each time."

While discussing life-style changes to improve my survival chances after a somewhat alarming MI, my cardiologist instructed me to give up all food items derived from the bodies of pigs: ham, pork, bacon, the whole shebang. He was adamant about it, saying that the worst thing for my arteries was fat and cholesterol, so swine flesh was a big-time no-no. (Of course cheese, chicken wings, ice cream, and several other things were similarly verboten.)

Within weeks, my blood work showed a dangerous trend toward chronic anemia. Doc asked me if my diet included greens, such as spinach, broccoli, collards, and such. When I told him that it did, he said, "Well, we've got to do something to improve your haematocrit. Re-introduce ham into your diet, say about every 4 or 5 days, and we'll see if that helps."

Sheeeeesssshhh!!!!

Juice - do you mean the "calcium magnesium supplement which contains vitamin D" I mentioned?

Tim - I made that part up, but very observant.

ET- GREAT!

Yep. Was that insufficient calcium for you or did I totally miss something (entirely possible) here?

Rodger the Real King of France said...

Evidently it's way insufficient. I looked on the can and it says 200 IU of Vitamin D. The tabs I bought last week are 2000 IU.

Haven't used Ciallis since the "greasy hair" look, and "DAs" went out of style.
