Doubt that this was the camera used for this shot, but still fascinating.

I remember reading about the old mechanical film cameras they used to use for atom bomb test filming...un-freakin'-believable what they could do 60+ years ago.

I once heard a talk by the head photographer on the first A-bomb test, Sgt. Ed York.

He didn't know anything about photography. His method was to get two of every kind of camera in the world, load them with different films, and figure he'd get good shots from some of them. He even set up the biggest flashbulbs in history -- 600 pounds of flash powder each -- to take flash photos of an A-bomb explosion.

He had a lot of interesting stories. But he wasn't a self-promoter, so almost no one has heard of him.

Theres a guy that posts over at SondraK, his father was the man who shot some of those atom bomb shots.
Has the photos too.
