I wonder if the seatbelt/airbag are any use with a "seat" like that.

Several decades ago, I was having the seats in my Olds reupholstered. I got a call one night from my friend who was going to paint the car for me. But I had to get it over to his place across town that evening. So I set my toolbox on the floor, and sat on it to drive across town.
On the way I was pulled over by a police officer who could apparently see that I didn't have a front seat in the car. With a big grin on his face he started the conversation with "I noticed you weren't wearing a seatbelt."
Deadpan, I responded "This is a 1951 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. It didn't come with seat belts."
He stared at me for a moment, then told me to drive carefully, and walked away. - 2/25/08, 7:52 PM

David, I was in the midst of installing a bench seat in my Plymouth Voyager and needed some bolts. I figured I could make a run to the hardware store without bolting it down. Backing out of the driveway worked okay, but as soon as I started forward the seat flipped over, and me with it. Fortunately the car was slowed after hitting the curb, and I was able to dive over and hold the brake with my hand.

Driving around sitting on the tool box was not easy. I had to hold tight onto the steering wheel to stop from sliding backwards off the tool box every time I stepped on the gas.
In retrospect it is a stupid way to drive, but that was back in when I was young and indestructible. - 2/26/08, 12:38 PM
