Mr. Crazy Shoots the Nitro Express

Horry Clap
Shooting the .60 Cal Nitro Express  Handgun

This video is basically a "show and tell" about a custom built Thompson Encore (fancy version of the Thompson Contender). The Caliber .600 Nitro BR Express.

That's right... An elephant gun bound in a handgun. The story goes that the guy that built it is some kind of custom gun maker. He built this as an exhibition piece. He takes it to the range with him just to show it off, and the big guy that shot it (in the video) had been bugging the builder to let him shoot it. Now think about this... Only until fairly recently (early-mid '80's) the .600 Nitro Express was hands down the biggest, nastiest, hardest hitting, and heaviest recoiling weapon you could buy. It was designed for one simple purpose... to knock an elephant flat on its butt. It was really built as an exhibition piece for guys "compensating". This cartridge is known for breaking collarbones, arms, and shoulders of the shooter!

Think about this, in the gun world they use what is termed as a "recoil index" to kind of give prospective buyers an idea of what a gun kicks like. A 30-06 gets a rating of a 1.0, which for many people is about the limit of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably. A 243 is rated at like a .4, a .270 was like a .8, etc. The 600 Nitro Express is rated at a 9.4... 9.4 times more punishing power than a 30-06.

Now, watch the video.

Am I the only one that wants to take a try?

I heard He was promptly busted by the F-troop for building it and had to destroy it. Some B.S. about "non sporting use over .50 caliber" or some made up crap. Any one have any further info? Rodger, I got to shoot a .375 H&H Thompson Encore pistol at the range one time, if you ever get the chance to light one off, I highly recommend it. Something about a two foot diameter ball of flame out the muzzle just makes me giggle.

Reminds me of the time I shot a TC in .45-70 with a compensated barrel. It didn't flip up as I expected, it came straight back. I still have the scar from the hammer on the bridge of my nose.

Here is a link to the video of the 375 H&H pistol mentioned in my last comment. Lighting is too bright to really appreciate the muzzle flash, but they wouldn't let us turn out the lights. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdIY6BgXfXA&feature=related

Let me at that SOB...I shot my Dan Wesson .445 Supermag to the point of where it was like shooting a .22 and my gun buddy Mighty White Hunter's were so scared after one shot, they ran like Obama at a KKK rally...Let me at it!!!

Ever seen a 10 gauge shotgun? Gramps had one, and this 9 year old city boy had a sore shoulder, but didn't wince or fall on my ass. Now, if he woulda had shells for his 8 gauge double barrel (I am not making that up) it might have been a different story.

A 160 lb. Englishman shoots a 16,000 lb. elephant with a .60 caliber 16 lb. rifle.
The elephant goes down.
The Englishman goes down.
Whomever gets up first is declared the winner.
If neither gets up, their possessions are divided according to the Law of the Jungle.

Rodge: I believe you. I had an uncle with a couple of 8 gauge. He started his kids out on 12 gauge so they wouldn't be sissies, moved 'em up to the 10s, then made them beg to use the 8s.

He needs to get a grip!

HFS!

That's gotta hurt.

At least he was aiming in the right direction.

The Contender in 45-70 is not bad at all if you use the factory loads and it is a ported barrel. Now I never shot mine with pure wood grips, I was smart enough to use the decelerator and then got the synthetic grip and forearm.

Now .308 in a 14" Springfield Armory Single Shot on a 1911 frame hurts like hell even with a beavertail. The SASS replaces the slide on a 1911 and gives you a tip down singleshot in rifle calibers I have a 10" .223 and a 14" .308 It is a heavy beast compared to a TC but it has the benefit of having my carry frame and it's associated familiar trigger and safety.

I hope the shooter paid to replace the scop on that work of idiocy

When you saw how Goober was holding that hand cannon, you just knew what was about to happen. I am surprised it did not split his skull.

One has to ask what such an artifact is "good for"?? If you cannot reasonably control it, then you cannot hit what you are aiming at--mebbe the noise would scare off the faint of heart??

What does the BATF mean, "non sporting use over .50 caliber?
Watching big macho guys shoot it like this one is worth every penny it takes to build and reload one!

Early days of African exploration, Frederick Selous had a 4-bore elephant gun: fired a 4 ounce ball. He blamed it for ruining his shooting skills.
