Are we giving robots too much power?

Way back in the 60s, I took my cue from the SciFi writers and predicted the transition from subservient to self-programming, self-reproducing, self-aware robots would be around mid-21st century.

I have since amended that, pushing the date up to somewhere around 2020 as the time robots would become aware of their awareness and commence original thought, self-direction, and a sense of self-determination . . . free will, if you prefer.

Writers refer to it as a "singularity," an event with profound and irreversible effects on advanced societies and the business of being human.

I will be long gone by that date, and there's damned little I could do to influence the event one way or another, but I do not think it bodes well for my grandchildren and their progeny.
