Actually, I was just in Oz and they really did have to increase what we call the fed funds rate. I think it was up to 7% compared to 2.25% here. They have realistic standards that have to meet to secure financing on home purchases.
It seems like every day there's another $2 or $3 or $400B flood of cheap money dumped into the economy. Today Fannie Mae & Fanny Mac lowered the actual capital requirement to 20% from 30% and PRESTO-$200B.

Being an ex-Aussie I've had the pleasure of watching John Clarke and Bryan Dawe on TV. To this day they still do a TV segment once a week. You can watch them here.

IMO John Clarke is the best satirist on the planet--even if he is an ex-Kiwi (New Zealander).
Unfortunately most Americans don't get good satire--I mean the subtle "carve-em-up" type. Also since most of Clarke's/Dawe's subject matter is about Australian politics it'll be, sadly, lost of most the readers here. -

FYI a "Super fund" is short for superannuation fund--the Aussie equivalent of a 401(k).

Hey, A-1, In '76 we traveled W.Europe and met many Aussies who were always good company and we loved being called Yanks. On a train from Rome to Vienna, we met a Kiwi (Dunedin). He is still our friend to this day and we keep in regular contact. Always, great to make friends that transcend politics and homelands. We DO have much in common. :)

I visited Kiwi-land, including Dunedin, in October 1989. Spent a month driving around the whole country (north & south islands). Pretty place with LOTS of sheep.
I also lived in Germany for a year in the mid-80's. Met lots of Yanks there. Unfortunately mostly the loud demanding types. I also traveled Europe by train and met lots of fellow (then) Aussies, Kiwi's and Canadian's (who always seem to sew their flag on their backpacks). Didn't meet many young American's--I guess most are in college getting an education, I mean brainwashing ;-)
Now I am a Yank, but one that is a bit more worldly than most ;-) -
