Hindu Dot

Toward Understanding and Getting Along With Other Cultures
The Dot

For centuries, Hindu women have worn a dot on their foreheads.

Most of us have naively thought this was connected with marriage or religion, but the Indian Embassy in London Has recently revealed the true story.

When a Hindu woman gets married, she brings a dowry into the union.

On her wedding night, the husband scratches off the dot to see whether he has won a convenience store, a gas station, a liquor store or a motel in the UK.

If there is nothing under the dot, he must take a job in India answering telephones and giving unintelligible technical advice to frustrated Europeans.

LOL, that's been my rule of thumb for over a decade. If someone from the dirtworld is behind the counter, I push on to the next objective. Man, those rooms smell nasty.

The way I heard it, it went like this:

Q: Do ya know why Hindu women have a red dot on their foreheads?
A: Cause their husbands are always poking them, saying, "you're so (*$%# ugly!"

The same here in the good ol' USA.

Was on a job out at Whidbey Island, WA, and their network was so FUBAR'd that I had to call Microsoft tech support. Now, being about 25 miles away as the crow flies from Redmond do you think I got an American on the phone? Wrong-O, tummeric breath.

"Ell-o, dishis Shteve, how may I asshist you?"

"Horseshit. You're name's Sanjay."

"Actually, it is Sanjeev."
