Plastic is the future

Stuff that works

Here's today's tip.  I've been using a commercial roll of plastic wrap at home for 3-4 years, and this is just the second roll.  I forget what it cost at BJ's, but it wasn't very much for 3000 (by 12") feet of wrap.  I leave it on the pantry shelf and use it for everything.  Carry on.

Whereas I put stuff in just about anything ... plastic bag from the Commissary produce section, old bread wrapper, Tupperware, Pop-Tart box ... to nuke it if I think it might Vesuvius all over the inside of the cabinet, my wife became a loyal disciple of cling film. Saw some caveat filler piece on TV one time that warned against heating up stuff in the wrong containers, such as Rubbermaid, Tupperware, and others, so she put everything in glass or Corningware, then covered it with clingwrap.

Did that for at least 5 years until one day some guy on TV said that using Saran Wrap and similar products in the microwave produced dangerous toxins, including dioxin, which build up in your body and cause all sorts of nasty problems with lower GI tract, liver, and such, especially in younger people and women in their child-bearing years.

Then she bought a set of those covers you put on various microwave-safe bowls, the ones with the useless indentations for liftin 'em off, but then heard another guy sayin that even those things deposit certain chemicals via the steam that collects on them and drips into the food.

Said her doctor told her "NO PLASTIC!!" in the uq, "ever." And that even includes the dishes and bowls that ready-to-heat stuff comes in; apparently you're not s'posed to wash those things out and use 'em again.

I say Screw It (I mean, I'm 68 years old, and we're talking problems that need a quarter century to accumulate in most people, and there's never been much danger of my gestating offspring in my belly to full term and loading them up with chemicals) and warm stuff up in whatever dish or bowl or cup or other thingy I find it in while diggin around in the fridge ... cover it up with whatever's handy, bags, boxes, napkins (I find empty cereal boxes with a single paper towel are especially neat for warmin up old pizza, hot dogs, burgers, ribs, garlic toast, fried chicken, and other stuff). Sections of boxes work pretty well on bowls, too, since they won't sag into the food like paper towels or napkins.

Wife sez I'm a barbarian and doomed to die from some horrible accumulated toxicity. Keeps me from havin to wipe out the grease spatter in the uq from stuff I'm heatin up for the grandkritters, tho. She comes home, kitchen's clean, kids are fed, and I don't get yelled at. Problem is I never can find out where she keeps the goddam cling film. One time I found it in the garage! She'd been wrappin dead fish for freezin.

ET,
I like your way of re-using pgs. Mr. Juice rolls his eyes each time I rinse out a plastic or glass container instead plopping it into the recycle bin. Hey! I am recycling when it get used to store dry goods in the cupboard. It was already paid for when purchased with the food it contained. Why spend again???
As for poisons??? We are ALL gonna die someday. In my mid-50's and haven't been killed by my environment yet. Not even those nukes that would've got me if I wasn't for hiding under my grade school desk! :D

I agree: We are all gonna die SOMEday whether it be from plastic, some "impurity" in the air, second-hand smoke, or whatever. Live life to the fullest and have fun!!!!

Just be sure to wash that microwaved food down with a beer to kill off any weakened cells and you'll be fine.
