Several years ago (circa 1994) home was a WaPost discussion board. I described someone as "pecksniffian," which delighted everyone, and after that I just became "pecksniff." I had to shorten it because my ISP only accepted 8 letter names.; 8/13/08, 1:54 PM

Ah 8 character unix luser names. My first Internet system was a 486 running Sun Solaris 2.1 with an 8 character luser name limit. Unix shell access only (no home computers had IP protocol or ppp). I crafted up a menu system that would let users type "M" for mail and that started "Pine" the most graphical unix email client, "N" for news which started TRN or "threaded news reader," etc. And who remembers Archie, Veronica and Jughead?
