What a Day

Final Car Payment Sent: Last Wednesday.

MoSup tried to stop on an oily road in the rain.  She rear ended a pickup truck, which sustained no damage.  She was going so slow, the air bag didn't deploy.  Will you look at this. Cop told her they'd total it because it has 60,000 miles. Stab me in the liver.  But wait! Nobody was hurt.  USA. UAS. USA!

PS - While I waited for the tow truck (for 3 hours), " CRASH

Glad she's OK Rodger. Whew.
Lemme guess. Prolly a place where lots of drippy trucks stop for a light, asphalt with its aggregate smoothed slick by years of wear and vehicles stopping, just after rain started. Tell your Democrap county board that Uhbama says you have a right to better roads and a free new car because they didn't take care of that one. What the hell, tell them you have a right to a free new car because you already paid for one. It's the fair thing to do.

Yes she's fine physically, but an emotional wreck.

Tailgunner, you're spot on.

Glad to hear MoSup is okay.

Price of doing business. I was married to a woman who regularly totaled a care every six months. Now she's married to someone else, lmao.

Hey. You can always get another car.

Another MoSup much more harder.

I know how you feel :-(

Long as she's okay. Insurance?

Dang, that sucks. I'm glad MoSup wasn't hurt, that's a blessing but keep an eye on her for the next day or so. I did the same thing to my volvo years ago, and a day later, the soreness started, in two days, I just plain hurt. Soft tissue injury, it healed just fine after a bit.

Glad to know she is okay.

Since when do the cops determine a total? Your insurance carrier may have a thing or two to say about that. And it looks like sheet metal damage. Unless the body structure it tweaked, it should be repairable.

Again, glad she's okay.

That pic reminds me of an accident I was in about 12 years ago.

I was driving out on the keys near Sarasota, FL in a rented Dodge Neon (POS but I digress) and stopped for an opening drawbridge. Guy in a Lincoln Towncar rear-ended me about 5 sec after I'd stopped at the red light.

The back of the Neon was dented and the gas tank had been cracked near the fill pipe but was otherwise drivable.

The Towncar was a different matter. Front was smashed in, fan was in the radiator, hood was crumpled etc.

I drove off after the cop talked to him for what seemed like an hour (and me for 5 mins--"you ok?").

Funny part was car rental place charged me because the (leaking) gas tank wasn't full. I explained but...

I got rear-ended just two weeks ago on my way to work. My Dodge Ram had cream of Toyota 4-Runner for breakfast. My gas mileage may suck (13), but the safety and utility factors are worth it, and trading in for a lower mpg vehicle would be a wash, because the Ram is paid for.

I hope you have dropped the comprehensive yet.

Whoa, so sorry that happened. It's always lousy to have any type of vehicle disturbance, but crashes are the worst. Glad MoSup is good to go in the physical department. Make sure she doesn't re-live too much. Maybe some nice back rubbing will help, and Sleeptime tea.

Flag this for Rodger to read ,,,,,,, Glad the Mrs. is OK. The airbag did not deploy because of minimal bumper damage. most of this damage was above the bumper here, this airbag in this state is very danerous it could off at any time.I have seen a airbag go off after the patient as been removed and knocked the fireman out of the car and severly injured him.If you have this car at home Roger. I would not get in the front seat. I would this connect the battery but this is not a 'guarantee just be careful with a car with front end damage with no air bag depolyment its a time bomb

Glad MoSup is oakey doakey. What Spanky says is real. I got knocked on my donkey by an air bag two weeks after the crash.
But, why do you have a red crab on your license plate? You go crabbing?

Anti lock brakes: most significant change to automobiles since the introduction of the automatic transmission.
It takes a MUCH LONGER distance to stop. Why they heck this isn't mentioned in all the warning labels or in the owner's manual is a crime.
I am very glad she's OK.
Another vote for big, safe, gas guzzlers!

Rodger, the front of the car all smashed to hell is EXACTLY what you want. The deformation of the substructure absorbed the kinetic energy of a 4000 pound vehicle moving at 20? 30? MPH coming to a stop. If it were an old, rigid-frame design from the 60s your wife could be dead because SHE would be subject to a very high G-force deceleration.

BTW, I restore autos. NO WAY is that a total loss and don't you dare let the bastards at the insurance co. total it! The car's not 1/3 of the way through it's service life, and I can see that the windshield's not cracked, doors aren't deformed, and the radiator's barely dented. Replace that front clip ($1000 from a salvage yard), respray and you're good to go. $4000 at any decent shop.)
Again, don't let them steal that car from you (they'll auction it off and make back every cent they pay you!) and then jack up your insurance rates for ten years! Fight them, demand they pay for a repair.

If you can buy the parts and tow the car to my place, I'll do the work for you for free, including paint. Serious offer. Let me know if you're interested and I'll shoot you an email with contact info.

(RAK, I disagree with you w/r/t antilock brakes -- The only data I've ever seen that supports your claim is in the case of an expert driver on perfectly dry pavement, straight-line braking. In every other circumstance, the antilocks are *vastly* superior, being able to modulate the braking effort 30+ times per second. With four-wheel Antilocks, it's even better. They've saved my ass more than once on unexpected ice and wet. But if you know of a study or have data to support that position, I'm happy to be proven wrong.)

Woah! "#*!@X" is right! Be very glad everyone is okay. Think of it as a reminder of what is important. Make sure you give MoSup an extra kiss and a good cuddle and tell her again how lucky you are to have her around.

Jack, In my experience as a driver, and after responding to many auto wrecks as a MP, EMT and Fire Fighter, Anti locks take longer to stop a vehicle than non anti lock brakes. Yes, they keep your vehicle straight, that's good, but they do take more distance give all other factors are equal, surface mass velocity etc.
"...Prior to February 1992, six add-on antilock brake systems sold in the automotive aftermarket
apparently did not work and may make braking performance worse - and five other ABS
systems were under investigation, according to NHTSA [IIHS Status Report Vol. 27, No. 3.] Tim
Hurd of NHTSA's Office of Public Affairs said that the agency "is concerned about the claimed
versus the actual performance of these products and the partial brake failure that may result
from their installation."
Many police departments have encountered situations involving antilock brakes that resulted in
disaster. Some agencies cite instances where the ABS simply didn't work. Other departments,
with identical cars -- except that some are equipped with ABS, some without -- report that the
ones without ABS stop quicker than those with ABS. A few officers tested their issued ABSinstalled
vehicles and found if they disabled the system, stopping performance was better. I
cannot substantiate the accuracy of any of the tests nor explain how the officers drove the cars,
under what conditions, and so forth. I understand that many vehicles went back to the shop for
ABS adjustment(s), replacement, or removal. But that is just part of the bad news..."

Glad she's okay
As to the longer anti-lock stops, it's because the average driver does not have a clue about how anti-lock brakes work. The driver lifts off the brake pedal when it pulses! It scares them - they think that something's broken, or that the anti-lock is working and the driver isn't needed anymore.
Car salesmen have been asked for years to discuss this - I've only had one mention it during 6 purchases or leases by family members. OldeForce
