It's a mortar.

Muzzle is behind the soldier's left side.

You can barely see the mortar's legs ...

Explain to this civilian how mortars work please. I thought that the projectile had little propellant charges on the outside, around the fins in the back, and that the mortar tube was a robust steel pipe. The fat end of the projectile works like a seal against the inside of the tube, and the burning propellant pressurizes the back end of the tube, rather like firing a gun, only with no brass case. The pressure shoots the round out of the tube. So why is there so much dust being kicked up at the base of the mortar tube? Wouldn't all the propellant blast be up at the front end? Or are those things vented at the base?

I think what's happened is the recoil bounced the base plate, stirring up all the dust.

Drew - that's the base plate under the tube slamming against some very dusty ground.

Bingo, Lt. Col. Gen. Tailgunner dick. I was in the 81's platoon in the USMC. We regularly buried base plates. Was a newbie trick to send the boots back to the trucks for a base plate jack.

I gotta admit, for an old "wing-wiper" medic, that's one IMPRESSIVE picture. We never hardly got the chance to play with noisemakers like that. When I come back the next time around, I wanna be a Marine or an artilleryman.

Or Donald Trump.

BTW, word verification is irepent. Never happen!
