Niggerhair Smoking Tobacco WTF?

Today's WTF?
What were they thinking?
Niggerhair can valued at $595.00

No not the brand name.  In c. 1920 when this product was sold by B. Leidersdorf Company of Milwaukee, Wis., there was no social stigma attached to the "N" word, like it or not.  No, the WTF? comes from, have you ever smelled hair burn?  JFC!  Would anyone today sell Green Puke Pork & Beans?  Same thing.  I don't get those people.

Way back in the 40s, one of my mother's sisters dated a guy who rolled his own outta a tobacco cut that was very dark and curled up. My uncles called it "drill shavings." Never heard it called that term before.

Geez, I can almost hear Archie and Edith singing "Those....Were....The...Daaaaaays"

Archie of course would not be allowed on TV today (he smoked a cigar).

My parents had an ashtray that if you could take a stereotypical of the time view of an African tribeman's head in the jungle that is what it looked like. Not unlike the lady in the picture above but you put the ashes in the huge bottom lip. I remember seeing films in school of African tribesmen putting plates in their lips to stretch them out. This is what that ashtry looked like.
My parents didn't smoke but most of our relatives did and I think it was a gift from one of our crazy relatives so there was an ashtray in the house. I guess the ashtrays the kids made in school were not good enough.

My mother thought it was awful and threw the thing out.

In a way I wish it was saved because of the sign of the times, and just for shock value.

You could buy that stuff at the Coon Chicken Inn. Just like in "C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America". Oddly enough, all of the historical racist brands they highlighted existed in the north.

I work in Washington, D.C. and have actually begun to be hesitant when people ask me what breed my 26-pound cat belongs to. Why? Because Sam the Wonder Cat is a Maine Coon cat!
