I've always wondered what the motivation was for the common man in the ranks, to fight such a terrible war and suffer the deprivation that he did...It's easy enough to understand the reasons of the wealthy patricians who risked all, who had much to lose, and more to gain, but not the ordinary farmer and tradesman. The taxes?...Perhaps, but I really don't know if they were outrageous enough to warrant this rebellion and comittment.I wonder if it was, for the everyday man, just a matter of the heavy hand of the Crown coming down in the form of contempt for the 'colonials'and a low regard and widely known attitude of upper class British of contempt for the Yanks, and the fact that a large number of these men were Scots-Irish and Irish who had a bone to pick with England afterall....My Great,(many greats)grandfather, James Lawson left Cork Ireland and joined them. He is buried where he died,on his original land grant, given for his service in the Revolutionary army, in middle Tennessee and his grave was not too long ago dedicated and recognized by the DAR.This part of the family had an over two hundred year migration from Scotland to the Isle of Man(resided about 100 years), and to Ireland(also resided about 100 years) and finally to America...Probably similair histories for my Mc's and Mac's...Looks like we're gonna stay.
