Although at games held in the US, other countries are still expected to
dip their flag in mutual respect, America is the only country refusing
to return the gesture.
This originated from the 1908 Summer Olympics in London,
where countries, as historically done, dipped their flag to the head of
state in whose country they were guests: the team was dominated by
anti-British Irish-Americans and started the tradition of not showing
respect by dipping a flag whilst participating in international games
abroad. We don't bow to Islamo dictators either.
