But this is the first time she's lied. Really.

The Lying Speaker,
and the Lying Lies She Tells

For the first time, Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledged that in 2003 she was informed by an aide that the CIA had told others in Congress that officials had used waterboarding during interrogations.
Speaker's Comments Raise Detainee Debate to New Level

It was then that the speaker tried to crab-walk out of the session, and CNN's Bash stopped her in her tracks, demanding to know why Pelosi said last month that she hadn't known waterboarding was being used.

"I meant 'we,' we in that -- in that -- meeting," she attempted to answer.

"We were all clearly trying to get at the broader question of whether you knew about waterboarding at all," Bash said. "And the idea that we got from you was that you were never told that waterboarding was being used. But now we know that later, in February, you were told."

"That was beyond the point," Pelosi tried to argue.

The speaker's charges about the CIA's alleged deception and her shifting accounts of what she knew and when she knew it are likely to add to calls for some kind of independent body to investigate this supercharged issue, though Obama and many members of Congress would like to avoid a wholesale unearthing of the past at a time when their plates are full with pressing concerns.

Pelosi gave some ground on the question of whether she had been informed that waterboarding was being used -- though by her account she did not learn about it until February 2003, rather than in 2002, and then only from her aide. Instead of registering her protest to the administration, she said, she set out to help Democrats win control of Congress and elect a Democrat as president.

Hoyer passes when asked if CIA lied to Congress

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined Thursday to backup Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s assertion that the CIA lied to Congress during debate on the House floor.

At one point, she claimed that she did know about the interrogations but did not object at the time because she wanted to follow the “legislative process”. As the heat continued to increase, she decided to try to claim that the CIA lied to her and the rest of Congress. She now claims that the CIA deliberately misled her and Congress by withholding the information about the use of enhanced interrogation techniques. She sounds like a child caught in a lie, and instead of owning up to the truth when questioned, she continually piles lies upon lies.
NBC's Mike Viqueira was the first questioner. He asked if she had been "complicit" in the use of techniques such as waterboarding because her aide had been told that such techniques were in use.

"My statement is clear, and let me read it again. Let me read it again," she said. She looked for her statement. "I'm sorry, I have to find the page," she said. She read a few lines, then paused. "I'm sorry, I had the pages out of order." By now she had begun to employ her hands in the conversation, raising an index finger, circling her hands and finally moving both hands as if conducting an orchestra.

Body Language That Requires No Rosetta Stone

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's extraordinary accusation that the Bush administration lied to Congress about the use of harsh interrogation techniques dramatically raised the stakes in the growing debate over the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies even as it raised some questions about the speaker's credibility.

Pelosi lied about interrogation briefing

Thomas Lifson
If a CIA memorandum obtained by Jed Babbin of Human Events is genuine, then Nancy Pelosi shook her finger in the face of the nation and lied about not being told water boarding was used. A pdf version of the memo can be found here.

Golly Geez, it sure looks like Speaker Hankey
lied to Congress, lied to the nation, and gave false statements to the police.  And then tried to blame the chief of police. Right?  Two things about this.
  1. Some poor Republican is really in for a make-up bashing by the Washington press corps now.
  2. This summary by the WaPost's  Dan Balz  introduces the  Get Out Of Jail Free card Democrats expect, and rely on.
Pelosi is not out of the woods. She could have saved herself some trouble by admitting earlier that she had been informed that the CIA was using waterboarding. By doing what she did yesterday, she has assured that she will remain a central character in the political fight that is raging. But whether by design or accident, she also succeeded in enlarging a controversy that is no longer a sideshow.

Right on - 3rd in line to my great chagrin. I am so worried that this bimbo might actually get the job. In these trying times I don't know what possessed the Senate to make this idiot speaker - cuz she is old? That she is ugly? That she is a lying back-stabbing, evil weasel?

It was not the Senate. She is Speaker of the House of Representatives. There's another idiot running the Senate -- Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader.

This is the kind of political theater that just plain entertains.

F**king with and threatening the CIA about obvious bullshit like this is stupid even by San Francisco standards.

Even a week ago, Pelosi + 21 points was a sucker bet. I love this shit.

I don't understand why this is even an issue. An elected Democrat lies? I'm shocked! Shocked, I say! They all lie all the time and everyone knows it. This is what they call "transparency in government" - they all tell lies that everyone can see through.
