The bastards are retiring this magnificent plane in favor of some boring multipurpose fighter.
I am appalled.
Long live the Warthog! - 6/17/09, 8:32 PM

Though my vehicle lacks the GAU-8, it does wear the same sticker. :^D

Sweeeeeeeet!
Who doesn't love the A10! One of the finest closest support flying machines ever. Tough as an old army boot, just as dangerous. - 6/17/09, 9:40 PM

When I'm planning stuff at night, I always have 20-30 A-10s.

Desert Cat: You sure about it being replaced? I know it originally was 'retired' around the time of Operation Desert Storm, but that said war gave it a reprieve.
According to Wikipedia, it is expected to remain in service through at least 2028, possibly later. Now, Wikipedia is often an unreliable source, but I haven't seen anything more recent than Desert Storm which says otherwise, so far. - 6/18/09, 3:29 AM

Not retired yet. They're bringing them all to Gowen here in Boise to be fitted with new superseekrit stuff so they'll keep flying and fighting for many years to come (been in our newspaper a couple times the past month). I love seeing them flying around the hills and out in the desert.

The A10, for when "overkill" just isn't enough. Good choice Uncle Rodge.

Word has it the C-130's are up grading to 30mm cannon, too, for better accuracy and more stand off room.

Stick--
And the Marines are used to having some other service's worn-out equipment to work with.
(The Navy never could figure out how to stick 'em with a battleship, however.) - 6/18/09, 1:25 PM

But Rick, the Navy always takes hand me down Air Force bases. At least they golf courses are good.
