To hot of a handload or a barrel that's plugged with mud or something. Lucky he didn't lose some fingers.

Too hot a load would have failed at the bolt or breach.

He had crap in the barrel ... a plug of mud or a barrel full of rainwater.

Bet he has crap in his pants too.

Crap in the barrel would have produced a party lantern effect. Several years ago at our local range, a guy was zeroing his .270 for deer season. By mistake he had some left over 308 rounds in his vest, and without looking as he reloaded, inserted one of them. The 308 slug made it all the way out and hit the target, but the excess preasure jammed the bolt so that it took the gunsmith quite some time to get it open. In fact, the first gun smith failed.
One of our local pawn shops had a display piece with a lanterned barrel. They took the shotguin out, packed debris into the gun, strapped it to a tree and tripped the trigger from long distance with a rope. It took a dozen or more attempts to get the gun to fail.
Most guns can handle enormous chamber preasures. Most of the metal in th barrel is to hold uniformity during repeat shots, a heat sink if you will.
As I watched the vid, I was thinking they tampered with it some how.

That was a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker. I hate to see such a fine weapon wasted. Can I have the receiver?

Thanks B -- sometimes I think I've gone totally obtuse.

JeremyR: I shoot at Clark Rifles in Vancouver ... they have the internet-famous rifle that banana'ed on display there ... it was shot with a laser boresighter stuffed into the front of it.

Same pattern ... barrel split all the way down and pealed outwards.

Lanterning can happen if the obstruction is nearer to the breach ... happens a lot with muzzleloaders that some newb didn't tamp the load all the way down due to too much fouling.
