"Police State Democrats"

Imagine you're visiting Idaho or Arizona. A cop pulls you over and asks to see your driver's license. Then, even though your license is current, he draws his sidearm, cuffs you, and hauls you off to the calaboose. Your crime? You were driving on a Nevada license; you neglected to get a new and separate driver's license, in advance, for each state you're planning to pass through.

Ridiculous? Of course it is. Article IV of the Constitution stipulates, "Full faith and credit shall be given in each state to the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state," and Congress is empowered to make laws describing how "such acts, records and proceedings shall be proved."

But in fact, the situation described above is precisely what confronts a law-abiding gun owner who wants to carry his weapon on an interstate trip.

The votes were there to rectify the situation, or so you'd think.
“ On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted on an amendment sponsored by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., which would have allowed Americans to carry concealed firearms across state lines, provided they "have a valid permit or if, under their state of residence ... are entitled to do so."

Under Senate rules, 60 votes were required for enactment, and -- as Republicans Richard Lugar of Indiana and George Voinovich of Ohio joined with Socialist Bernie Sanders and 36 police-state Democrats -- the measure failed despite winning a 58-39 majority.

I think Dan Quayle could be talked into replacing Lugar.  Replacing Sen. Sumabitch with a real Republican in Ohio, a state in the thrall of ACORN, is no easy task.  I wonder how the jar holdingTed's pickled brain voted?  Not really.

Speaking of which, I'm pondering over which AR to get. What do you think:

Piston-driven or gas?

I'm also thinking of chambering it in 6.5 Grendel instead of the traditional 5.56/.223.

Any thoughts?

It never was that close Rog-CO's 2 dirtbag Senators both voted in favor but you can bet your last donut that Chuckie saw that it would fail and gave the green light for them to vote yea.

I don't have experience with the 6.5 Grendel, but am very interested in rebarelling one of my AR-15s for it also.
I do have a fair amount of experience with the 6.5 Swede that fires projectiles of basically identical weight and shape at similar velocities. 6.5mm 120 to 140 grain hunting bullets are quick and clean killers of deer, even for mule deer over 250 lbs. Nordic hunters have even taken polar bears with the 6.5 Swede for a century. The 6.5 projectile sectional density makes it a superior penetrator for bear skulls, body armor or bullet resistant panels.
The 6.5 projectile has that awesome ballistic coefficient, and isn’t nearly as punishing to my shoulder as my .30-06 or .270. When you compare the ballistic characteristics to the 6.8mm SPC, I don’t know why anyone would chose to build a 6.8 SPC over the 6.5 Grendel unless they were on a tight budget, and if that’s the case, just stick with a .223 and hunt with a bolt action in a “real” caliber.
As far as the gas piston, I generally like the idea, and have nothing but praise for the gas piston reliability in my Garand and mini-14, but having said that, unless you plan on being in a day long firefight, or patrolling in very dusty areas, proper cleaning and lubrication of any high quality AR will ensure reliable functioning for hunting, home defense, or other social work. If you have money to spare and want the ultimate AR, go for it, but for 99% of the folks out there it isn’t necessary if you maintain your rifle properly. Save the money and use it for high quality optics, a Nightforce scope or Trijicon ACOG.
Two points:
All high quality center-fire rifle ammunition is expensive these days, and can be difficult to find. This will be especially true for 6.5 Grendel. If you don’t reload yet, owning a 6.5 Grendel may be the straw that breaks the camels back and pushes you into reloading. Good luck finding reloading components these days!
If you’re going to spend the money to build up a 6.5 Grendel don’t nickel and dime it. Take the plunge and buy a Sabre Defence or Alexander Arms upper, and not some fly by night manufacturers junk. If you want a precision shooter / tack driver, get a stainless steel barrel. If you want it primarily for social work, get a chrome-lined barrel. Either type works well for hunting. Whatever you decide, I wish you accurate shooting!

That pantywaist suckup Voinovich used to be my Senator when I lived in Ohio. Now I'm stuck with Webb and Warner! I have duly chastised both of them and explained the close relationship between their nay vote and my aye vote for their re-election! Doubt they'll give a flying f**k about what I intend to do though! They're members of the dumbocratic party!

AR-15 haters always go after the cartridge and the gas system. They're both so terrible that the M16 has been the longest-serving main battle rifle in US history.

I say, good enough for the USMC, good enough for me. This is why I recommend an A4-style AR-15 with a 20-inch barrel and M855-type ammo.

Non-standard calibers can be expensive and are always harder to find. I'm reminded of a favorite line: "My gun doesn't shoot .338 Lapua, it shoots five-dollar bills."

AR15 Haters like the USARMY that just sent out bid requests for a new PISTON upper:-)
The AR/M-14/M4 is 45 year crime against every GI that had to use one in action. Politics US military has kept with that flawed design. It will be rectified sooner rather than later. It is the Ross rifle of the US military.

... and again the comments veer WAY off course while we all busy asking for the next great personal defense weapon to add to the safe: We have "Dinks in the wire" in the form of RINOs that vote against us.

Lugar went over to the dark side a long time ago. MFCS just doesn't give a shit what his constituents say. I spoke with one of his worker bees about the CIFTA treaty awhile back and had to interrupt that prick to ask him if he could be any more condescending. I told him I hadn't been spoken to like that since High School and I was getting all nostalgic. Little bastard hung up on me. Maybe it was the "John McCain Lite" comment.
