When I hear something about a poll of "conservatives", I immediately start looking over my shoulder. This is the same kinda crap that gave us John McCain last year. We oughta know by now that there is a concerted effort to ensure the continued election of cranial-rectal inserted idiots. We also should recognize how much fear there is about a truly conservative individual getting through to the electorate.
There's a brand of pastor, in my experience usually southern, who seem to think they're god on earth. They run the church. They tell people what is right and wrong, and call fire and brimstone down on those who disagree. Translate that to politics and you have Huckabee. Gives a very bad name to real Christians and true conservatives.
Ah yes, the Idiot wing of the party. They turn the liberty based conservative movement into a bowel movement.
The central, defining issue for all conservatives ought to be the federal budget. It takes a lot of money to separate you from your liberties. Democrats and tyrants alike need your cash to pay for judges, cops, seminars, printed and electronic media, media campaigns, PR campaigns, everything a tyrant needs to take your rights away from you.
You can scream and yell about abortion, or legalizing pot, or any other libertarian issue, but when you clear away all the chaff if you haven't cut back the federal budget, you may as well turn back home and prepare to lose your rights.
I have no problem with religious conservatives or their goals. In fact, I pretty much subscribe to them. I wanted my point to be that going to war under those banners is crippling. Libertarians are marginalized because when they wave the legalized drug flag, the rest of the message is lost. They too benefit under a federalist dichotomy. The real joy, and strength of our system is, or was, that you could vote with your feet. That's almost not true anymore. Returning to those roots would strangle political liberals to death.
I don't believe that the gummint should be in the business of legislating morality. IMO that is the goal of many religious Conservatives including Huckabee.
I want a gummint that respects individual rights. If I choose to be immoral (by somebody's standards) then I should be able to as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights.
"...certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
How is it that Huckabee wants to legislate morality? Abortion? It's Roe v Wade that legislated morality, or lack thereof, and imposed it on all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Huckabee wants a return to pre-Roe when some 29 states had already made abortion legal.
Homosexual marriage may be what you refer to, but I will counter that it's not a law he's trying to impose on a society, but one he wants to stop being imposed. The argument that Homosexuals are disadvantaged by not being allowed to legally marry is primarily horse shit. The power of attorney, living wills and otherwise answer most all the complaints. The bigger problem is they are asking a vast majority to reject long held tenets so they can win an argument. F--K them, and I have gay son whom I love dearly, but say the same to him.
Prayer in School is another example of where a minority imposed their will on the majority. F--k the minority. If you're allergic to peanuts I'm sorry, but we don't ban peanuts because of it. Well, we did, but I'm sick of it. You enjoy a right to the pursuit of happiness, not its guarantee.
Are you out of prozac and scotch again Rodger?
Tim
Hey rodge ... how about a libertarian/Constitutionalist solution:
Overturn Roe v Wade as a 9th/10th amendment violation. Stop federally funding healthcare, and the abortion issue is no longer a federal issue.
Marriage? Why the hell is the State in the marriage business? Exchange powers of attorney, and sign a contract, and maybe make a name change. Want a ceremony? Talk to your local sky pilot ... that stuff is between you two and him ... not the freaking government.
Prayer in school? Why is the government paying for school? Where is that in the constitution?
The issue of "prayer in school" only arises because the gummint runs the edukashion system. I don't think they should have *any* involvement in it.
For me the gummint has three, and *only* these three, duties
1) Provide a police force.
2) Provide a military.
3) Provide courts to resolve disputes.
nope - just fed up
Amen.

Sorry, Rodge. Compulsory state-sanctioned and approved "voluntary" prayer in the schools is, in my view, a whole bag of Not Good.
It will end up being a form of test to see who "the good Christian" kids are, and who the heathens, Christ-killers, and others who need to be beaten severely after school are. Ask ANY Jew who grew up in the FEW places that had mandatory voluntary prayer. My late aunt remembered well.
Besides, be careful what you wish for. I am sure Christian kids in Dearborn are gonna love facing Mecca 5 times a day.

I don't know what your experience in public school was. Mine was reciting the Lord's Prayer (Protestant version), hearing a short reading from the Old Testament (Protestant version) and Pledging Allegiance. Oh, the agony. I imagine some were reluctant participants, but had the good manners not to be an asshole about it. That would later fall to parents looking for some relevance in their unfulfilled lives, I imagine.
Like those who spend their lives looking for something to bitch about. The permanently offended.

Bingo Rodger! You nailed it. Single issue candidates, platforms and parties will split the conservative electorate every time.
Federalism, aka strict interpretation and enforcement of the Tenth Amendment will immediately trump anything the Feds try to foist upon us. If a nanny state like Taxachusetts or Kalifornia continue their headlong rush to total control of their people's personal lives and bankruptcy, those that approve of that can stay or move there and those that don't can leave.

which is why you, dick, are a Lt. Col. Gen with banana leaf clusters
Anybody notice, Gov. Huck is the only one with a regular TV show on FNC? Could it be he wins because the folks polled see him on the tube, saying what they want to hear, than they do the rest?
