get a Mac
yea, sorry. get a mac and never deal with any of that crap ever again. upgrades take a few clicks and everything works afterword. the only problem is that you will immediately join the people you now call snobs in calling the pc people chumps.
Oh, c'mon, anon ...
It prob'ly ain't gonna work on a Mac, either.

(me 'n my Mac since '84)
Don't buy another computer, just install Linux on your current computer. I suggest http://www.ubuntu.com/
When installing there is the option of a dual boot, which means you can start the computer with WinXP or Linux. All your XP stuff is still there if you want to use it, and you can access your Windows files when using Linux.
In re "get a Mac:" I'm on a Mac and I find that kind of simplistic advice not always very helpful.
Of course I'd be quite happy is Herr Doktor Professor von und zu Schlong were to trade platforms but what people overlook is the huge cost of the installed software base.
A Mac alone can be had for a decent price. and it comes with a nice suite of apps. But how much would it cost to replicate *all* the funky functionality on Rodger's machine.
So, in order to be price-smart I say: absolutely nothing. Rodger's smart enough to know what he needs to do.
I forgot to say that anyone who replies "Get a Mac" will be hunted down and disemboweled with a broken CD. Sic Reagan, Sic.
Had same problem. Uninstall the latest XP Service Pack and try again. The SP changes the version number of XP and the "compatibility checker" fails on that new version.
get a mac? LOL --- sure and when you boot up to a flashing ? mark because the machine couldn't wake from sleep, make sure to reset the SMC, PRAM and oh try safe mode for the heck of it.....then make an appt at the mac store with a mac 'genuis' as your so-called great computer needs a new hard drive --- been there done that.
no thanks
A hunerd bucks, 2.5 more weeks and you can have the new winnows 7. Now back to the game.

See if Rocco can get your money back. I'll have to go with Windows 7 too. Sorry Rodge.......
I think you have been scamed by the seller. Later versions of MS OS require more and more things to prevent one purchaser from uing on multiple machines or from giving away/selling the intellecrual property.
In all ll my early windows machines the OS was on 1.44 disks and you cpuld install them anay where. The "this software will not work on your machine" message is probably because it is a vopy of the OS supplied to a manufacturer for their machines. And by that I mean a version for the GP XXP005XX01 and nithung else. Not for all HP machines for sure. You cannot legally sell MS operating systems supploed with computers - tje license is for the specific computer
Hewlett Packard has software updates for an 873n and an 864n but do not list an 874n. Google trawls through a gazillion servers and returns only one other legit result for an 874n besides yours, Rodge.
Mac troll worked..
if you need better hp drivers etc i always go to hp's site. very comprehnsive.
macs are far from trouble free ..my internal networked computers will no longer talk to each other
Just rec'd my new laptop two days ago and it's great (HP Pavillion dv7-1450US 17) that includes a free upgrade for Windows 7. It seems Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. So, I'm looking forward to it.
