Overheard at a secret bowling alley, ca. 1925:
"No officer, we're not bowling, just having a little drink."
"Alright then, but if I hear any pins a-crashing, I'll take you all in."
Creepy - Perhaps Geraldo Rivera should do a special there looking for a certain missing Teamsters President.
My ole man and uncles used to make pocket change when they were kids during that era setting up pins in alleys like that. Their day job was cooking up bathtub gin, and Gramma wasn't pleased when they got carted off to jail for a night (chaperoned by Grandpa of course, who most likely slept soundly). When I heard the story, I thought "Why would she get all bent outta shape? At least she knew where they all were for once."
