the duke was offered the opportunity to spank Maureen O'hara in the quiet man also, but didn't. He was "walking" her back from the train station and a bystander runs up hands him a stick and says "Here's a nive to beat the lady with." the Duke grabs the stick says thanks and keeps on dragging his wife through the meadow.
