Astronomy + space funding is important.
If you spot the thing early enough you can make it change course by merely painting one side white.

It's true that astronomy is the polar equivalent of omphaloskepsis.
But doncha know, when I recently found myself in Socorro, New Mexico, I went to the VLA first and the Bosque del Apache second. We just can't stop ourselves from learning useless stuff. -
