I watched a replay of "Crossing the Line," Dateline's doc on Debra Lafave. She was the Florida female school teacher (one of many recently) who had sex with a male student, in this case a 14 year-old boy. When the case broke in 2005, I (speaking for all men) ...

was stunned that this very, very beautiful, 23 year-old married teacher would have sex with a 14 year-old boy.
was extremely jealous that a 14 year-old could realize most men's (not mine) fantasy.
was incredulous that teacherette-underage boy coming-of-age instruction was anyway comparable to man-underage girl rape!
had no idea what women thought about her. Straight women.

After watching Matt Lauer's interview, I am now impressed with her as an up-front, sincere woman who had a reasonable defense, but is willing to accept the consequences without whining. I wish she would run for Congress. Here's the first 8 minutes, or so. All segments may be found here.

Any punishment for her, I feel, is unjust.

I know of a school where it was a regular occurrence for teachers, male and female, to do that to their students. Widely known among the students, and the faculty. It's absolutely disgusting and she should still be in prison.

Yes, it's not a violent rape, it's statutory. It certainly would be an insult to compare it to a violent crime that women (and to a lesser extent) men, have to go through...But it's still illegal in the eyes of the law. I don't think for a moment that this isn't going to screw that kid up when he's older.

And saying that this is "waaaay" different than an older man diddling a young girl, is even more ridiculous. In both cases the child is under the age of consent, too immature (yes, we were all dumbassed kids at 14), and the perpetrators in both cases should have known better, and were in positions of power.

Yeah, I'm sure it would kill me as a father to hear that this happened to my daughter, but I don't want ANYONE, no matter who they are, touching my children, boy or girl.

I couldn't fathom the defense of her when all of this broke. She's a disgusting skank and should be getting as good as she gave in prison right now.; 5/16/10, 10:11 PM

There is a big difference between adult Male, young female and adult Female, young male. Why? Because the consequences for a young female are much more serious than a young male. Young females can get pregnant while young males cannot. Young females are more easily coerced by an adult with physical power over them whereas young males are not (like you'd even have to coerce most of them in the first place - unless you were ugly or something).

The consequences for young males are nothing like the consequences for young females no matter what you believe the age of consent should be. What is the age that the average kid has sex these days anyway? I'd suggest it is around the age of 14, and I don't believe most of those young males suffer terrible from it.

Do you honestly believe this boy has been harmed? I mean, he was bragging! That doesn't sound like he has come to any harm to me. What he forced against his will? If so, there are grounds for arguing something of a criminal nature were done.

Do you remember being 14? Had that opportunity landed at your door step, can you can honestly say that you would have to have been compelled forcefully to allow this hideous devilish vixen to have her wicked, wicked way with you? Can you honestly say that you would have been so psychologically screwed up that you could never have normal sexual relations with another woman again?

I suggest that if any young man can answer yes to any of those questions, that he already has a headful of problems.

What would have been different if she had been a 14 year old schoolmate? Would that have been a crime? If so, who;d be the criminal? Her? Him? Both of them? What is the difference? Personally, I'd be less stressed by my boy getting bonked by an older woman than by an immature female who might be less capable and immature and not fully capable of being responsible for her actions.

As for her actuall punishment, it's harsh, harsh, harsh. Her working career in the profession she loved is over. Her freedom is curtailed for 10 years! 10 years! Her ability to move around is terribly restricted (not within a thousand(?) yards of a school?) That's tough. How many schools are out there? Goodness, it'll make traveling after her "freedom" a right pain. One mistake, one wrong turn and she does hard time.

The law is an ass, especially if applied blindly and this serves as a perfect example of that.

As for her defense, it's certainly a valid one. What rational person is willing to throw away everything like she did? And you know what? She owned up to it. That's hardly the kind of person trying to use insanity as a dodge. She is no skank. She's a woman with a screwed up brain chemistry and an unfortunate past.

There was no justice here.

Some people never learn a damned thing. They're called democrats. In any case, it's impossible to watch that first clip and not have one's heart go out to a very troubled soul. Nevermind that men and women are apples and oranges when it comes to sex and most other things.

Juice said...: Everyone's comments here are valid. In the end, because she is so visually attractive, it greatly assisted her outcome. I think both counties saved mucho dinero by not spending on a trial her face and seeming honesty could have won over a jury. Once again, the eyes of the beholders.
As a mom, I made damn sure my own daughter was never touched. Unlike my parent, I would've fought like hell for her if it had. Certain things leaves decades of harm. But I've never met a man who (when younger) experienced an older woman and complained. Always more of an education. FWIW.; 5/17/10, 11:15 AM
