The quote is from a guy who lived through Argentina's collapsed economy. When you're trying to buy food from a black market, he's saying that your gold coins will be discounted to the value of lower valued jewelry. Makes sense.

I agree with anonymous that ammo is the currency of the new milleneum.
My wife, however, prefers gold. - 5/27/10, 3:22 PM

Thanks Rodger and all for answering my question re gold coins in your earlier post. Everything you said makes complete sense. We've been buying what ammo we can get here in California, but Arnold has passed a law making it illegal to mail order ammo after this October. (MFSOB!!!) I guess now I am left with no other alternative than the buying of large quantities of booze. I look forward to it...;-D

I'm seconding Rodg here, I think I read the same article some years ago. The Argentinian inflation was huge, and on the streets, it was gold rings that ruled.
I'm also gonna mention silver dollars. You can get them on E-bay for $15 or so, and they carry their own authenticity. My buddy is buying the silver bars, but I'm not sure I'd ever trust them, certificate or no, unless I could assay them first. Other silver coins can also be purchased, for around 20% more than their cost as pure silver. - 5/27/10, 9:29 PM
