Like the government, they are trying to "protect you" from yourself.
That too .. but wtf? Not only isn't it recognizing the hard drive that's clearly there, but ... Vista?
Rodge,
Download the Clonezilla live CD image and burn it to a CD (or put it on a flash drive). Boot from it, and you can make a bit-image of your hard drive on a different drive. You can then restore the drive from the saved image if something goes awry.

And, it's free.
Rodge: Assuming that the user does not own the machine is the start of computer security.
This is why UNIX systems are more robust than Winders ... UNIX always assumes the snot nosed brat using the University's computer does not own it.
When you turn that stuff off in Win-7, you also tell the OS that any damned script on a website you personally browse into also owns the machine.
Turn it back on when you are done futzing with it.
Oh, and Windows 7 IS Vista, but with most of the crap removed or turned off.
It's what Vista should have been, if the committees of Ad-men and "executives" had been lined up and shot before development.
Vista drivers and programs are exactly what you want for Windows 7.
Norton Ghost is great too, although it reboots to some command line DOS to perform it's magic. And it really is best to copy it when everything is down.
AGAIN... try a linux distro and start sleeping.

Linux, it just... works.
(Clonezilla is very nice... and linux based)
I just completed my first "Full Restore."
