Brownie Surprise

69 year old film developed, and guess what?
Apparent Hoax
Boned Jello
Some dude came into possession of this antique Kodak Brownie camera.  It had been stored in the  footlocker of an unidentified sailor on the USS QUAPAW ATF-11O.   There was a roll of exposed film inside, from 69 years ago as it turned out.  December 7th, 1941.  Here's a few of the pictures; you can see the rest here (careful - there's some whack soundtrak that plays).  It's incredible that the film could be developed, let alone produce pictures of this quality.

The  Jap Zero silhouette confirms that this is the plane shown, not surprisingly.  Gives me chills.

Of the seven battleships anchored at Pearl, only the Nevada, Tennessee, and Maryland were not sunk or destroyed, so I'll guess this is one of them. Thanks to Tom Mann for the tip.

I believe that was the Pennsylvania and the reamins of destryers Cassin and Downs. They were in drydock together and the japs hit the destroyers worse than the battleship.

Here's a site I found a few years ago. This guy develops film found in old cameras. If you want to see a slice of what this country use to be, check it out.

The photographer sure got around - battleship row to Hickam Field to Ford island... USS Quapaw must have been the first jet ski.

A few years ago, I watched a Navy helicopter power up, hover a moment, then go completely apeshit and crash, spewing rotor blades and landing gear for a couple hundred yards across the tarmac. It seemed to be slow motion, surreal, but it wasn't and there was no instant replay. Imagine how those guys at Pearl Harbor felt as that massive nightmare unfolded on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Who believes Snopes? It's run by a guy and his wife out of their kitchen; both are big time lefty;'s, and they reguarly make stuff up, especially where Obama is concerned (See "Rodger's Razor" below).

Actually, if you look at the tint and contrast differences between the two pics I posted, it raises questions. The fact that the QUAPAW was built after PH is irrelevant. You have to take Snopes's word that these are archive photos (or did I miss the link?) And who knows what the seaman did? Maybe he was some Admiral's driver, and they toured the base in car and scout plane, with him snapping pictures?

Rating on Snopes - Inconclusive

My BS detector is going to the red zone on this one. Taking out the duplicates, there are 15 pictures.

The old, vertical-format Brownies, at least the one I owned, shot 8 pictures. There were several film sizes, depending on the model of Brownie you had. 116, 122, 120, and 620 were the sizes I can recall off the top of my head. Mine was one of the last made; it used 620.

The picture of the people milling around the high-wing airplane looks familiar.

The only picture shown in Brownie vertical format is the one of the slip with a battle-ship(?) and two wrecked ships in the foreground.

One more thing: for those who own, for example, 120-film cameras and are getting 12 exposures, there is a reason. You are shooting square format. The 120 size (and its cousins like 620) shot 8, 12, or 16 shots, depending on the format of the camera.

Rodge,
I can tell at a glance that the two photos you put up were taken with different focal-length lenses.

At the link, I've seen at least two of those photos before, and one is quite famous.

Great photos, none the less.
Thanks.

Stupid Snopes. They ruin everything. In the spirit of the mainstream media I will not let the truth get in the way. I'm starting my own website that not only confirms urban legends but builds on them i.e. Richard Gere is practically a habitrail and Jamie Lee Curtis once impregnated herself.

Some of those pics are way famous pics that have been seen for years. No doubt bout it.

Hand me the knife when you're done, Rodge.
Hey, I spelled "nonetheless" as three separate words.

I think I've seen, at one time or another, just about every still photo taken at PH. However, about half of those look new to me. It looks like a number of the photos were taken at the Sub Base. There are duplicate shots of an ASR with a McCann chamber on deck. I would have remembered seeing that before. If you accept that about half are well known archive pics, ( Pennsylvania in drydock, Shaw blowing up, and some of the shots from Ford Island), then it's possible that some of the rest, those with more of a "Sepia" tone are really new, from an undiscoverd source. Just my two cents. QM1 (SS)
