If I ever check in a bag, I always make sure it is the one that carries my dirty laundry. - 8/23/10, 12:38 AM

Luggage straps with the buckles taped with fiber tape. Just make your suitcase more difficult to get into then the one next to it.

A colleague of mine regularly had to go to Malaysia and Singapore for business. He said when the customs form was handed out on the airplane, there was a highlighted, brightly colored warning: DEATH FOR DRUGS IN SINGAPORE with a similar warning for Malaysia. He was so concerned about baggage tampering and becoming an unwilling drug mule that he made it a regular practice to wrap his bags in duct tape and sign his name across every tape juncture in sharpie ink. After many years of this, he's still with us, I'm happy to report. Between crap like this and the airport security hassles, I'm glad I don't have to travel anymore unless I want to.

Worried about tampering? Simpler solution is to just buy a hard shell suitcase with latches instead of zippers or use a properly locked duffle bag. If you really want to feel secure and don't mind the extra hassle, then an old fashioned steamer trunk like these http://budcoproducts.com/store/featured.html work best of all. Pretty good for a reasonable price.

I'm getting to the point where if I'm flying somewhere I only take a couple of changes of clothes in a carryon. If I need anything else I buy cheap from someplace like Wallymart and throw it away if I have to.
Another cheaper and safer alternative to airline carryon is to ship anything you need FedEx or UPS. Contact your hotel and they'll hold a package for you.... - 8/23/10, 2:47 PM
