"Mr. Greenstein, a resident of Mercer Island, Wash., will pay a fine of $6.4 million and be required to lecture on business and legal ethics at his alma mater, the University of Washington School of Business. Mr. Wilk, 51, of Seattle, will pay a $600,000 fine and lecture at New York University School of Law, from which he graduated. Quellos was a global player in hedge funds and ran a large fund of funds — the core business that BlackRock acquired and now operates as BlackRock Alternative Advisors. "
These guys need to be taking courses on business ethics and tax law (preferrably at Eglin, Lompoc, Supermax Colorado, etc) - not leading them.
As a tax lawyer, I always marvel at the lamebrane ideas some tax lawyers use to ply their trade and scam the government.
Ethics was flushed out of the blood of lawyers decades ago.
Look to the schools where they are trained... that is most likely where they learned their values.
Those fines and community service are chump change for a couple guys who sold their company for $1.7 billion.
How about the $240 million they owe the IRS/their clients? If a burglar stole that much, he'd get 20+ years in a hard core prison.
Seems to me if we want Wall Street/Investment community to return to ethical behavior, there needs to be some real consequences for shady activities.
