No more Hilton, Spears, Lohan upskirts?

Nice car door idea

Interestingly, I had this idea several years ago, but for passenger aircraft.  Sigh.

Hmm. Not bad. Although I do wonder how well it works after you drive a couple miles through wet Texas clay. Will it have enough clearance with all the cling-ons hanging on the door. Oh yeah, as the video shows it's for suburban moms and Hollywood starlets!

I want to see how this works in a hard rain.

I'd like to these doors go up, rather than down, precisely because they could be configured to act as canopies to shield you as you load and unload groceries and the like.

My parents have a van with motor-driven, horizontal sliding doors. They're a pain in the ass. No, I mean the doors. (Hi, Mom!) They're slow, balky, and prone to thinking they're smarter than the humans using them.

That's sweet but I have to point out we've had these on our spaceships for decades.

Passenger aircraft?

Many cargo aircrafts have been using these for ages for the belly cargo doors,
some even for the main cargo doors or even pax doors, some sliding up
in the roof, some sliding down in the floor.
Thus they are used as plugs, pressurization locking them shut.

Old stuff, been there, done that!

Still a far better idea than Mercedes' wing doors...roll in the ditch upside down and never get out!
(Unless you have an airplane's crash ax and hack your way through
the floor.)

The traditional hinge doors are going to be used forever because
in case of an accident where the frame is bent, they are the only design
where it is somewhat possible to pry them open
to rescue passengers

Rodge,
I think this would go great with the flying cars we were promised.

great idea, but simplicity always wins

Awesome concept. What happens in an accident when you absolutely, positively have to get out in a hurry? Seems more difficult than a hinged door?

My '74 Bronco doesn't have them. YOU don't need them.

It's cute, but I gotta wonder how it would work after - or, indeed, during - a blizzard. Not a trivial consideration here in the frozen wasteland!
