Dang.
We spent the entire month of February driving around NM. Got our only speeding ticket in Santa Clara, rushing to a star party at the City of Rocks. Paid the ticket, but I still don't think we were doing 15 miles over the limit.
NOW you tell me we could have picked up new local driver's licenses?
Maybe the Vermont plates would have been a giveaway. Maybe they don't target out-of-state Miatas in their speed traps. Maybe we shouldn't run the engine up to 6K in town. But we're going back for more.
There's a little hotel called the Sierra Grande in T or C. It's devoted to the art of bathing. Each morning and evening, they will pour a fresh 1500 gallon hot spring bath and leave you alone for an hour with a pitcher of ice water. On our next visit, we'll be better documented, etc.
We who had to endure 8 years of Bill Richardson, a man too corrupt to even make it onto Obama's cabinet and who started the Driver Licenses for Undocumented Democrats in our state, are pleased that he has been ousted in favor of a conservative who understands ethics, morality, and the Constitutions of both the United States and the State of New Mexico. - Skyhawker, Doug
Helly, you should have asked a Texan first. NM is Texas' biggest speed trap. They have been notorious for stopping out of state tags my whole life. And, you have to go pay it right then, if it hasn't changed. Don't feel bad, all out of staters get stopped. Be vewwy vewwy careful.

But gotdangit New Mexico is...mystical. I love going there. In the winter when I see an extended below zero cold front coming to Golden, I pack up and head down. I used to take mushrooms and hike down the Carlsbad Caverns. And the alien "museum" in Roswell is a hoot.
Northern NM in the summer in the high mountains is Teh Awesome and there are numerous small ski areas along the NM/CO border that are just wonderful.
Going to Anton Chico where a friend had friends was fantastic-Butch and his gang used to hide out there.
And standing at the edge of Escondido and staring into Mexico and imagining crossing it will awestruck you.
I love CO but NM is beautiful, unlike any other state.
