Actually Christie fired the judge before he commuted the sentence.

Commuting to time served was probably the safe thing to do.
The man was reported for being suicidal, which started this whole mess. He's still a felon, and can't legally own a firearm, but the NJ "justice" system has to lay off of him. -

I wish that Christie would pardon the man.
I commutation is okay, but this guy needs a clean record.
And he also needs to move to a free state, like down here in Tn.
Good grief, my car and my briefcase almost always have guns in them.
Does anyone really use the glove box for gloves? -

molonlabe28: If you read through the comments at the link, you'll see several commentors (clearly familiar with the story) noting that the man only requested commutation and not a pardon because he wants his appeal to go through. He's apparently hoping to get an "innocent" ruling on appeal...

I hope this goes as a lesson to any family member who thinks they are doing their good deed for the day when they report an offhand comment (other than an unambiguous threat of harm) which "could" be considered suicidal. The law will not ignore it if you report it, and it will be interpreted in as idiotic a way as possible.
It happened to me a year ago. I still will not talk to my relative, who felt she had to report it (rather than speak to me first). It was second-hand to her, and was NOT suicidal. Fortunately I didn't get imprisoned. However, I'll NEVER have any contact with her again.

A pardon doesn't clear the record. It only restores civil rights e.g. the right to vote. Only an expungement wipes away the public record.

Skoonj: You need to deal with whoever gossiped the info to this relative, as well.
Gossips all need to be slapped down hard. A blackmailer can, at least, be paid to shut up.
I agree that this man's mother was probably a well meaning idiot, and that he was probably not really suicidal. -

BTW, it looks like that commuted sentence is having one good effect ... the victim of the NJ "justice" system has now thrown in with the crowd trying to overturn bad anti-2nd Amendment laws via appellate court. -
