Illinois Internet Tax

Illinois forces web shoppers to
report, pay online sales tax

A harbinger of things to come as states scramble to hold onto their power to spend. Hearkening back to the black days of Jummy, I remember bartering as a popular tool to thwart the tax bastids.  Another, buying a Volkswagen Rabbit diesel, and running it on fuel oil, (same thing, but no road taxes) has since been thwarted with mandatory smell additives -  if I remember correctly.  What are your suggestions for living in the coming underground economy?

Actually, diesel has lubricants that are necessary for engine life. And it wasnt smell additives. The fuel is dyed to indicate taxed or non taxed (bulldozer fuel vs truck fuel) here in Florida.

re: lubricants: that was not a concern in 1977, so it sounds like a trumped-up.

Tennessee has "required" reporting on line sales and paying taxes on them for several years. You're also supposed to pay sales tax on out of state purchases you make and bring back into the state. (Say you drive to Kentucky and buy a bunch of clothes. Your supposed to pay Tennessee the amount of sales tax you would have paid if bought here.) A year or two ago Tennessee was sending undercover enforcers across the line into Kentucky to take down license numbers of TN cars buying large quantities of cigarettes so they could be pulled over after returning to TN. One cigarette over the personal limit and the state siezed the cigarettes and your car. Hi boys and girls! Can you say Sieg Hiel? I thought you could!

Bartering is being reintroduced on items that are taxed the highest. Alcohol and tobacco products cannot be sold without the tax stamp but plumbers, small engine repairmen, landscapers and mechanics are more than happy to trade. Georgia is investigating taxing hair cuts and other services that have otherwise remained exempt. It will be interesting to see the number of basement barber shops that pop up if this is implemented.

Maryland does exactly the same thing on smokes. They hang out at the Nice bridge (Rt 301) and start doling out fines all day long...
