Fuel Fuel Everywhere,But Not a Drop To ...

East Texas Natural Gas
Could Fuel U.S. For 150 Years

A newly discovered natural gas shale in East Texas could help fuel America's appetite for energy, providing a plentiful source and potential $1.75 trillion economic impact for the area.

In some ways the potential benefits of tapping into the Haynesville Shale are like that of a “Jed Clampitt” rags-to-riches scenario, according to one energy expert.

Comprising about 3.5 million acres, the shale contains enough natural gas to power the United States for about 150 years.

And it's in portions of East Texas and Louisiana.

“We are the Saudi Arabia of natural gas,” said Ernie LaFlure, vice president and general manager of EOG Resources. “The Haynesville Shale is among the top five in the world — I think it's the greatest story of natural gas today.” [More from Tyler Texas]

Coming into the new year there were numerous stories in these parts that natural gas was in abundant supply and prices would be way down.  So what happened to that?

Why is it only the Feds have the power to grant drilling permits? Isn't this something the states could do? After all, they arguably have better "situational awareness" of their resources than a remote bureaucracy in D.C.

I think this issue is ripe for the states asserting control over the Feds.

I'll start making the popcorn.

When I was a teenager a friends father had a propane powered chevy el camino . He drove that thing until the body rusted off of it , and the day he parked it in the weeds , he pulled the dipstick and showed it to me . The oil was as clean as HONEY , And he had over 400,000 miles on the thing ! That made one helluva impression on me , and that was 20 years ago ! SMIBSID

Anon - You are el-correcto. Hopefully more states will follow South Carolina's light bulb lead, and start telling the feds to fuck-off.

SMIBSID - When I posted this I wondered why we don't have more natural gas powered cars? A great story, yours! We as a nation have so much promise left in us, it's heartening. Just some malignancies what need some radiation and we'll be USA UAS USA!

I have a water treatment company that successfully cleans the shale oil extraction water free of any remaining heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons.

let me just say that, right now, business couldn't be better. The companies we're working with are being very proactive toward the environment and cleaning the process water before discharge. Their fear is that showing up on the the EPA's radar would no doubt significantly alter their "altruistic" behavior. Know what I mean?

That discovery has more in common with Jed Clampett than they know. Jed and his family originally were from East Texas. One of the early episodes had Mr. Brewster of OK Oil telling Milburn Drysdale (apparently no relation to Don) that this find could turn out to be the biggest ever in East Texas. Then somewhere along the line it morphed into they were from the hill country of Tennessee. Next time TV Land has a Hillbilly Marathon, watch it--you'll see.

Offshore permits are controlled by the feds. Onshore leases and permits on private or state owned land are controlled by the states already. I just drove the back roads from Monroe LA to Austin and there were rigs in people's back yards. Fracking supply companies in every county at least (and yes, that's the fracking that injects super high pressure water into a well to crack the rock, and sand to hold the cracks open so gas can flow). We're drillin, baby, we're drillin.
