I am now 67 going on twelve. I got one of the Red Ryder BB guns for my eighth birthday and have never been without one since. Many hundreds of miller moths, katydids and grasshoppers have fallen to a 350 fps steel BB in the meantime. Also the odd starling or sparrow. Squirrels are simply accelerated as are feral cats and the neighbor's dogs whilst taking a crap on my lawn.

Hit a dog in the nuts while he's squatted down making land mines and he'll be as nervous as a whore in church about it for weeks. One little hairy crap factory would tremble and whine for half an hour before he'd take a crap after having his nuts stung once. Never got close to my yard again. Hilarious.

When I turned 12 my parents bought me a lever action 22 rifle. For my 16th they bought me a model 94 lever action 30-30. For my 35th birthday they got me a Red Ryder BB gun. When I opened it Dad sheepishly apologized - "Sorry, it occurred to us a few months ago that we never let you have a BB gun when you were young. So we got you one now."

It was the best birthday gift ever, even if it was a few decades late. I hadn't been hunting much at the time and didn't get out to the range often. So it was nice to be able to have something I could shoot in my own backyard.

Now that my kids are old enough, I take them to the range shooting weekly. But that old Red Ryder still sits just inside the back door of the house. My son learned to use it to keep cats out of his sandbox when he was 7.

His grandparents bought him his own when he was 10. He leaves it at their house, because when at home, he would rather shoot mine. If it lasts long enough, I haven't decided if I will give it to him, or wait and give it to his kid.

You're gonna put your eye out.

A few trips down the road, a handful of Coke bottles and we could afford another day of ammunition for our BB guns.

In spite of our efforts, we never could thin the population of cicadas and dragon flies.

I once took out a goose with a Crossman pump BB gun. Man, that was good eatin'!

Re shooting a dog in the backside while in mid-hunker: the payoff is that their legs actually do start running before their feet touch back down on the ground, just like in the cartoons!

Rog, thanks to you and this site I ordered one and it was delivered Friday. There will be a very happy 8 year old grandson come Christmas morning.
There will be one happy daughter-in-law looking down from heaven too.
