A 5lb sledgehammer works better than a magnet.
Bits can often be retrieved from magnetic wiping; physical damage that makes the platters unspinnable is preferable...

Last week I needed to dispose of a number of old hard drives. I clamped them in a woodworking vise and drilled a couple of 1/4" holes through the platters.
