Kristopher - the Christian Science Monitor reported "Once Baumgartner had left the capsule, small explosive charges detonated to cut the capsule free from the balloon. The capsule deployed its own parachute for a damage-free return."
I expect that capsule was pretty expensive, and they'd want to re-use it.
Casca - Red BUll is the main sponsor. Don't know the financial arrangements, so I don't know what Baumgartner is making. -
