Connections

Science historian James Burke's series, Connections,  used to be a staple on early Hitler cable channels,  and I loved it.  So much so that I finally went searching for it on NetFlix; not carried. But, Lo! The series has it's own .  For them what like that kind of stuff.

“They don't know [history] now.  And this is a fundamental change in America. Machines are taking over the world; these Blackberries, or whatever you have in your hands—these iPhones; people can create their own little universe in this bubble, and you don't ever have have to go out of it, and they don't.  And schools don't teach it .”   — Bill O'Reilly

Fascinating series, I used to be amazed at where his connections went.

How very, VERY strange....

I just watched THIS very episode (the first in the series) last night after not having thought about the program in over 20 years.

...a bit creepy, Boss.

I guess great minds do...well...you know.

Thanks, Rodge.
It's one of my all-time favorites.
I couldn't find Kenneth Clark's "Civilization" on Netflix, either, but I found it on YouTube.

I too, missed this series, for a long while, it was the only reason I would watch TV. Last year, I ordered the DVDs for the series via net flix. still interesting, BUT he, a typical Brit, credits the Moors with undo brilliance simply because they had a fine collection of Greek/Hebrew/Egyptian/others ideas in the Library at Cadiz...

Dunno about streaming.

Loved Connections. It should be required viewing in all schools (it's better than most history classes...)

My favorite episode was when he was talking down the end of the show, with a large NASA rocket behind him at a distance. His delivery was perfect, he made his point and the rocket lifted off. Talk about getting it in a single take.

Best show on tv. Burke was a Master!! Loved both his shows!

So you missed Connections 3, Lip? I found all three series last year. The first one was by far the best.

Back in the mid 70's there was a show called, "The Secret Life of Machines". I'd love to get a hold of that one again.

Burke's Connections and Friedman's Free To Choose are my two favorites of all time.

El Jefe has a point. If students spent four years of high school doing nothing but study those tow series, we'd a a nation of geniuses.

What a find, thanks!
