If you're a coffee brewing method-ist, move along, nothing to see here.  And I don't want to hear the ridicule.

Yesterday I happened upon an old leather valise, abandoned no doubt because the strap broke.  The contents were a clue to when I'd last used it.  1998.  I know that because inside were a Continental Airline boarding pass to Phoenix, and a Sedona hotel receipt.  Also, along with the usual  hotel shampoos, soaps, and remote control booty, were two packs of coffee.  Each packet (made by Mr. Coffee)  made "4 cups," which happens to be exactly what my cup holds.

I brewed one.

Holy crap!  It was  excellent. So good in fact that I went ahead and  did the second one. Yep.  Definitely better than today's coffee.  Especially since 100% Aribaca Bean. coffee have disappeared from planet grocery store. 

However, before making that second cup I weighed the contents—exactly ½ ounce. This morning I  weighed out exactly ½ ounce.of the Wal-Mart coffee we use, and brewed it up.  Guess what?  It was maybe even better! 

From this I will surmise that the key is in the measurement.  That sounds elementary, but I scoop by eye,  willy-nilly.  Normally I would have used half again that amount (my daughter-in-law Jen would use 6 times!). So there you have it.  You cannot go by the length of a man's thumb, you have to measure.

My rule of thumb is one scoop per 4 ounces of water. You can always dilute it with hot water but you cannot make it stronger. I then use a vacuum brewer based on Boyle's Law to make strong but unburnt coffee.

The other thing I found to be critical is to clean the coffee maker with vinegar. I have a hamilton beech maker. I put vinegar in, start the brew, then hit the button to stop it and let the vinegar sit for a bit.

After a half hour or so, I run that through, then a 50/50 vinegar water mix, then 2 pots of water. The coffee after that is GREAT.

Also, I throw the coffee carriers in the dishwasher whenever I get a chance.

However, based on what you are saying, I"ll bet I'm using too much coffee

Arabica beans were the original coffee, which was first brewed in Ethiopia many centuries ago. It is a harsh bean, when compared with others, such as the Columbian, but there should be some available.

Ummm, Rog, Walmart 'Great Value' brand advertises itself as "100% Arabica Premium ground coffee" on the can. I buy it to serve in our urn when I cater large parties. Always to great compliment. Also, my old favorite 'Eight O'Clock' is 100% Arabica. It's been my every morning coffee for 35+ years. Thought you'd wann know.

Holy CRAP!!!

I was thinking about brewing a fresh pot of coffee when I read this... By the time I was in the kitchen and had everything ready except measuring the coffee I was thinking 1 0z per four cups. Oh well for my 12 cup pot I measured out 3 oz, but that seemed way too much so I removed an ounce.

While it is brewing, I returned to the computer and realized I had doubled the amount of coffee needed and was still over by a half ounce.

Since I pour the coffee into a 60 oz vacuum bottle to use for at least two days, I will add some hot water and use another vacuum bottle to hold it all.

I wrote your measurements out and will try it for the next pot. Damn, I'm getting old! and semi senile

I worked for Dunkin Donuts for a while and learned that filtered water is the key to getting the best of the bean to bind to the water. Its true.

And on the "Rocky likes Walmart" thing........its true. Tastes a lot like Dunkin if you like that taste.

I'm always confuzzled by the archaic use of "cups" to mean fiddly little old lady cups with saucers.

So: How much coffee, by weight, for each 8 oz cup, by volume, of water?

DJ - who uses a friggin' CUP for coffee? We use mugs around here, 12-16oz.

I like the el-cheapo Caribe brand, which is a mild espresso. Brew it up like regular coffee and I get a strong rich brew but not bitter. It does not last in the pot. Brew it, drink it, brew more if needed. I use 3/8-1/2 cup of coffee grounds to make 6 "cups" on the Mr. Coffee. It's enough for both of us to get moving in the morning.

40+ years ago, when I was stationed at Camp Casey, S. Korea, I took a trip to Seoul and ate at some restaurant. That was the BEST cup of coffee I had ever had. I STILL remember it.
Lord only know what the ingredients were......
