These guys have been saving lives for a while, with their development of chitosan bandages for shrapnel, and now these for penetrating wounds. They're a Washington County-based startup (not Portland, as often reported). And I'm not big on using wood products in the sponge composition, 'cause they still have to be dug back out. But it's a huge advance, and they're still looking into bioabsorbable replacements for the wood fiber.

Am I the only one wondering this? if a bullet hole was big enough to accommodate that device, what would there be left to save?

The main issue with penetrating wounds like these is massive bleeding. Until now, the approach in the field was to unroll gauze, jam it into the would, apply pressure, and hope. If that didn't work, it was necessary to remove the packing and repack.
And it's incredibly painful; medics generally remove any guns in proximity before beginning.
This stops the bleeding, first time, every time. It's far less painful, and the bleeding's been halted before they can even apply a bandage. -
