There aren't many of my fellow Jarheads that did not envy your squidly person's boot camp experience.

Jarhead boot was a kick in the ass for an 18 year old walking erection. We used to run by the fence separating us from the airport and the navy. The Drill Instructors would yell "kill the squids" and we would all jump on the fence and growl at the sailors on the other side smoking cigs and sliming around the area in an unmilitary manner. Awesome times. Semper Fi -Anymouse

Esteve, do you think the honorable "King Neptune" will survive political correctness? Maybe it's already dead, wouldn't surprise me. Now that there's split-tails on ships, will they be offended by guys dressing up as split-tails. They've just gone and f'd everything up now. -Anymouse

Damn, did that bring back a few memories. I was in from the early 70's to the mid 90's. And the old Salt telling the tale is spot on. The Navy I joined was much more in tune with what he was describing than the Navy I retired from was.
I miss it still. But the Navy of the 70's was a much more ship shape place...PC was just two random letters in the alphabet, and not something which had yet poisoned our culture, society, and workplace. Shipmates were Sailors first...then they may be of another gender or ethnic group...but always Sailors first...sadly this is no more. And we as a country...and my Navy in particular is all that much poorer for it.
Fair Winds and Following Seas to all my fellow shipmates...and to the author of the post you linked to Rog!! - 2/25/14, 10:29 PM

From a retired sailor to my Jarhead brethren. In 1974 as I stood on my side of the chain link, enjoying a smoke and watching y'all run by near the runway in San Diego, I knew I made the right choice.

Anymouse, I think Neptune threw in the towel long ago. I know a young Air Force SpecOps type who is getting out with fourteen years of service and ten trips to Iraq/Afghanistan. Just can't take the PC any longer and he's only 32.

I think the Administration is making a big mistake with their downsizing and PC enforcement. They are putting a lot of people who already hate their guts out where they can now speak their minds and a lot of people who have a very good understanding of "insurgent warfare." I remember working with an ex Special Forces type back in the late 1980's who told me, "I like tanks, they are crunchy and fun open up an remove the soft insides." I can just imagine what would happen to some Police SWAT team's vehicles if they tried to get frisky. Also now there will be even more Vets running for offices.
