LINUX

Oh My

This is my first post using LINUX. Had to do it because my WIN 7 got so screwed up that the recover software wouldn’t even show. I place total responsibility on myself- for using Advanced System Care, which is the Al-Qaeda of watchdog programs-- actually Mafia, since it exacts retribution from any who try to disable it.So here I am. I have no idea what I'll use instead of Paint Shop Pro, or what text editor. And I don't care. I hate Window's guts. (But, in the spirit of Christian love, I forgive them. Pricks.

Which linux distribution are you using?
By the way, you can run Windows in emulation using Virtual Box (I use the Oracle flavor).

pdwalker said...: You can also run windows under Linux using VMware player (free for home use). Works well. When my last windows machine died, I imaged the drive and booted it up under VMware where I continue to run it as it was (after a few driver changes, that is)

leelu said...: GIMP for images, LibreOffice vs MSOffice, gedit for a basic text editor. I prefer Oracle VirtualBox to VMWare, but depending on what you're doing, those 3 or 4 programs should do you.

The file has to loaded into the /bin or /sbin directories.
It's best to have used a program loading manager like RPM to have all associated files and libraries loaded to their appropriate directories. It gets easier with each painful episode. Enjoy!; 6/1/14, 5:03 PM

Let's see if there is a price to pay. Will keep the comm channels open, and give you a sitrep if there is anything to report. Please advise if there is a change in frequency.

I too am looking for something better. As it is, whenever I log on I go directly to my task manager and disable all of the ASC processes that are running so that my computer moves at better'n a snails pace.

I still use ASC for a once-a-week system scan but, I'm aware and careful of what I ask it to do since I've been bitten too many times because of inattention.

Jon said...: I'm also running Linux Mint 16 after many years of Windows. Libre Office and Gimp are loaded by default, so you don't have to do anything to 'get' them. I don't know what window manager you installed - I prefer KDE as being most like windows - but all you have to do is click on the start menu icon (usually at the top or bottom left of the screen depending on where the tool bar is for your window manager), choose 'applications' and then 'graphics' to get to Gimp or 'office' to get to Libre Office writer. Enjoy - Linux is great once you get over the shock of it being 'almost' windows.; 6/2/14, 12:49 AM
Anonymous said...: I have been using ASC for quite a while with no problems whatsoever. The feature set is good and on my desktop I use Carbonite so even if anything happens I can recover it. This laptop works very nicely and I don't know why so many have trouble???

Steve In Tulsa said...: Advanced System Care is not made by Microsoft. Why are you blaming them on Microsoft? That seems misdirected. And I use Windows Defender which is built-in with windows 7 and 8. It does a good job for me.

Programs on Linux can be run from anywhere. But they must have the file mode of Executable. http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_chmod.htm

The restore files were on Drive D, and ( I've been doing this Windows thing or 25 year) the windows restore came up with nothing. Couldn't find it.

I blame Windows for just generally being the worst OS in all of Mankind. Not worth cataloguing. Since I'm at a point where I only use the computer to read stuff and occasionally blog, I no longer care. I feel clean.

Also, PLEASE give me direct ling to any Linus programs you suggest. Thanks.; 6/2/14, 8:50 AM
Rodger the Real King of France said...: Here's when a sane man would have quit iobit's Adavnced System Care. Over a year ago I decided ASC was too much hassle and took it off my start up program. I decided to rely on Avast, which had served me well. Almost immediately I got a (supposed) pop up from Avast saying they had an update. Okay. The next thing I know I had bee hacked. Not only had Avast been blocked, but the hack had created its own administrator to stop me, and all other attempts to delete it.

I have no proof, but I feel that this was related to my cutting ASC out of the equation. After this latest escapade, I feel that it's something this outfit is capable of. I have placed ASC on my national Barn Army terrorist list.; 6/2/14, 8:58 AM

leelu said...: If for some reason, LibreOffice isn't installed, go to libre0ffice.org and download the appropriate .deb file (x86 for 32 bit machines, x86-64 for 54 bit.) Follow the instructions to install. Generic install instructions are here:

DVD video can be a bit of a science experiment. If Mint doesn't include dvddcss, you'll need to install it.

drew458 said...: ASC can be a bit of a pain to break out from being a TSR that runs all the time. That's what it's designed to do. But if you use CodeStuff Starter to disable the services, stop the processes, and kill the startups, then you can run it when you want just as a system cleanup tool. Steve In Tulsa said...: You can run any file from anywhere if it is a stand alone executable. To identify runnable files examine the 'executable' bit displayed by the ls command.
