I remember how that was another use for brown paper grocery bags. Try that with a plastic bag.
I remember too the long list of names of students who used the book before me on the preprinted book plates on the inside front and back covers. Some were more than thirty years old, and still very serviceable.
Try that today.

Don't forget the big squirt of Elmer's you had to do to strengthen the binding.
And I remember how jealous I was of the "rich" kids who had commercial book covers, available for about a nickel each at the 5&10. - 9/27/14, 3:00 PM

And that phone? That was the pre-war model from Ma Bell. The handset weighed about 7 pounds, which kept her from talking on the phone too long.

Those old phones were made to last forever because they were leased by the phone co.

Yeah, cast iron is like that.
And if you didn't take care of the phones, Ma Bell sent the Phone Police around to talk to you. Just ask Johnny Fever. - 9/28/14, 12:27 PM

I thought this was one of those "which one of these is not like the others" game. Of course, the first is not like the other two since, although they are all well past their useful lives, the second two were both useful and ingenious for a significant period of time.
