Secretariat is "significant people?

Last I checked it was a g-d-damned HORSE!!

Is this a joke or is the Smithsonian employing brainless morons?

L. Ron Hubbard? I understand his notoriety but one of the ten most significant religious leaders in US history? Not many Baptists on the selection committee. Little puzzled by Schwartzenegger too. Steroids in sports maybe?

Rodger the Real King of France said...

Well, he was a significant athlete; I'd have used Cal Ripkin

L. Ron Hubbard was significant; he represented one of the early attempts to mock religion and the joke sprouted wings (dingbats).

It looks like they acquired the list from a survey they placed in the National Inquirer and Cosmopolitan.

Kim du Toit said...

Any list of "Best Presidents" which does not include Calvin Coolidge renders the rest of the list irrelevant.

They left Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton out of the OUTLAW group.

A thought provoking list. I would add:

Mark Spitz — unprecedented clean sweep of 7 Olympic gold medals.

J. Willard Gibbs — easily the greatest American-born polymath ever and bane of chemistry students for all time.

Robert Goddard — invented a little thing we call the "rocket engine."

Nicola Tesla — 60 hz AC power is important to quite a few Americans.

Percival Lowell — PLuto is still a planet in America.

Grant Wood — Regionalism, Post-Impressionism, American Gothic, etc.

Stanley Kubrick — 50 years later, try streaming 2001 for free.

Ponce de León — if you consider Florida to be part of America.

Eli Whitney — bankrolled the Confederacy.

Cyrus McCormick — bankrolled the War of Northern Aggression.

Orville and Wilbur Wright — somewhat more significant than Oprah.

Norman Borlaug — greatest humanitarian in human history.

Charles and Frank Duryea — we still like fast cars.

Jennings Cox —best American cocktail on Earth.

Helly, some of us here in rural Florida are still Americans but we are slowly loosing to the invasion forces.

Have to say I was a little surprised to see L. Ron Hubbard on the list until I realized that Joseph Smith was there as well. That explained everything.

President Merkin Muffley and his lovely wife the First
Wookie were not included. Look for the director of the
Smithsonian to be greasing the undercarriage of a
city bus in 3, 2, 1...

Christopher Columbus was never in mainland America, let alone the USA.

Who makes this stuff up?

Rodger the Real King of France said...

Obama has in 6 years undone 240 years of American law and exceptionalism. I see as a very significant.

Wow,

A Kim du Toit sighting!

I don't usually bother with the best of. I got my own lists and they never include thinking of the best of. My list usually include that that one dare not speak their name because evil people always seem to slip under the radar.

Hold on one second. I reread that post after I finally managed to get it to appear and I would like to delete it.
I hugely enjoyed reading Kim du Toit's blog back when I started reading blogs. He is one of the very best people I know based purely on his writing and blog.

I'm worried that the way my previous comment reads might lead any person to think that he is one of the evil ones. He's not. He is one of the best.

My apologies for gooning the language.

Rodger the Real King of France said...

dun't worry, we amn't drooling libs here Mr. Ship

Kim du Toit said...

Mr. Defiant (if that is your name), I fail to see anything in either of your posts which could cause me any form of umbrage. You DID fail to mention that Barack Obama is a MFCS, but we all make slip-ups now and again.

Esteve said...

Since Roger is idle today.....Madonna and M. Jackson ahead of the Beatles?

What, no WRITERS? Hemingway, Faulkner, E.A. Poe, Stephen Crane, Steinbeck, Melville, Jack London, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Ken Kesey (and others I'm leaving out)?
