From Ron in Ohio;
Rog;
I too have about a 20 year-old English version of "Song of the South" on VHS-NTSB. I decided back then that I'd better buy it before it was banned world-wide.
I remember, when I was only in the 1st or 2nd grade in a small town school in Indiana, we were taken by school bus to the County seat, New Castle, to see a special showing of this Disney classic. Just a sad reminder of how much schools have changed.
Nowhere in that story are any of the black folks, from Uncle Remus on down, referred to as "slaves."
Their characters in the movie are all treated with respect by all of the white folks just as Joel Chandler Harris wrote it in the late 1870's and there are so many life-learning messages for young folks in the story. - 4/24/15, 11:30 PM

Ron, Your story and feelings about SOTS are, I'll bet, pretty much universal. As for the culture that allowed that sorry chapter, it's grown into a monster that's chipped large chunks out of of the First Amendment.

Last time I saw it in a theater was in the early 80's in Toronto.
It's still available on line and Google says that you can buy the DVD.

Several years ago, while walking through a Flee Market I ran across a SOTS VHS Tape. Couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough.

Last time I saw it was '79 - '80, with the girlfriend and her kids.
My daughter didn't get to see it. - 4/25/15, 10:29 AM

You can occasionally find 'SoS' on eBay. Good luck trying to find 'Birth of a Nation'
or Leni Reifenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" (acclaimed by the NYT!) anywhere except via P2P torrents.
