I still have the BUTT BRUISES from trying to skate over the sidewalk cracks in Evanston, Illinois in 1956! And he's DANCING! And SINGING! Then he starts tap dancing, like EVERYONE could do it!

And he looks SO COOL doing it!

I KNEW I shoulda been wearing hats as I aged!

My wife and I watched "That's Entertainment" when it was first released and I was amazed at how athletic Gene Kelley and others of the genre were. I told my dad, who was born in 1927, about the movie because these were all released when he was a young man and I thought he would have fond memories. He said "We thought they were queer." I guess they were girl movies.

Gene Kelly is one of the greats. Watching these kinds of movies when I was young is why I do not watch new movies. They can't beat this, even with their wire fu and computer crap. Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant (even is his comedies), just great stuff. Very happy I had a dad that loved the old films, the westerns, noir, all of it. And we watched all of it while I was in middle and high school.

My kids were raised watching John Wayne, Cary Grant, Bogart, Cagney, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Bob Hope. They are in their teens and early 20s and I can't tell you how many times one of them will be flipping channels and as they pass Turner Classic Movies - they stop. Makes a Dad proud...

I watched that Gene Kelly clip and I was DEEPLY OFFENDED -- No, make that OUTRAGED -- that among the throngs of people watching Kelly dance and skate on the streets of NYC, there wasn't one single PERSON OF COLOR. This is just more proof of the institutionalized, systematic RACISM that permeated our society then, still does and ALWAYS WILL!!!

Well, Anne Hyphenated. You watch a clip of a magnificent performance by a man wearing roller skates with steel wheels on concrete and you come away with Racism? Seriously? You have a right to be OFFENDED and OUTRAGED because there is no person of COLOR but as to that I say Ho Hum heard it all before much to often. You need to learn some history woman. The first slave owner in the US was a black man and probably bought his slaves from Obama's ancestors. I know you well woman. So take your worthless Something or other "Studies" degree and apply it to the Democrat Ku Klux Clan oppression of Blacks. Or better yet, just Go Away, sit down and shut up you ignorant fool.

Thanks PD. I guess she was so right on emulating the race baiting idiots that it raised my hackles a bit. My apologies to the lady Anne.
