South Dakota Drops Study of Early
U.S. History as a High School Requirement

“People separated from their history are easily persuaded.” —Karl Marx

Students in South Dakota will now graduate from high school without studying early American history, under new teaching guidelines adopted by the state.

After a year of deliberations, the state Board of Education adopted new curriculum standards that no longer require instructors to teach the first 100 years of U.S. history. Such milestone events and developments as the Revolutionary War and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution could be completely ignored. [full]

Disgusting, yes; but practically speaking I suspect it's already defacto in a high percentage of the nation's public schools.

Oh yeah, I remember talking with a fellow older worker back in the late 1970's when we were talking aircraft, the U-2 came up, and I mentioned the name Francis Gary Powers. And a younger worker asked, who is that? And the history of the Cold War evaporates.

'Lighten Up, Francis' is about the closest any millinial type will come to knowing about that name. And U-2? Wasn't that their dads Fav band? We're toast, I sometimes think, but then Rush (the guy, not the band) will rejuvenate my spirits. Damn, I still can't believe the Skunkworks turned out the SR-71 with slide rules.

I yearn for my youth...

Someone from the left must have figured out Lincoln was a Republican.

Ah. What the hell. Most of them weren't learning it anyhow, and still passing to the next grade of ignorance and incompetence.

Any history that has been taught in the last 60 years is pretty much lefty post reconstruction propaganda. Now they won't have to work so hard to convince everyone what a bunch of horrible bastards the guys in white wigs were. -Anymouse

Here in Florida, the kids get US History through the Civil War in 8th grade, the post-Civil War through modern day in 10th grade. Looks like South Dakota does the same thing.

It's true the younger generations know nothing of History, those who made it, why or the sacrifices made.
But they have google, if they are ever inclined to know, in between video games and texting.
