Interesting
that we (Canadians, anyway) knew about the benefits of heavy
sloped tank armor in 1942, yet only the Soviets
used the technique in their T-34 tank that defeated Hitler's more
heavily armored Tiger tanks.

We losty or Tanks at a 3 to one ration... America simply out produced the Nazis... Read Death Traps...
We finally fielded the heavily armored and 90 mm M 26 ... they could and did take on Panthers and Tigers face to face...

From what I read, the Huns went to their heavy industry construction companies to build tanks. The type of companies that build cranes and RR engines. They built excellent tanks, but their business model was 10 or 12 units per year. We went to Chrysler and GM, whose business model was 10 or 12 per hour. We got auto industry quality, but lots of it. Plus our factories never got bombed. Makes a difference.

The American Army doctrine was to not use heavy tanks to engage enemy tanks. The Sherman and the Stuart tanks were for infantry support. They were to be used as mobile guns. Example: knocking out a machine gun nest.
Tanks were to be taken on by tank destroyers. The tank destroyer was a lightly armored, but very fast (up to 60 mph) mobile gun platform. See the M-18 Hellcat as an example.
The doctrine got screwed up because in part due to poor integration of the tank destroyers with the infantry units.
Our tanks weren't 'bad'. They did what they were designed to do and were far more reliable than the German armor.
Later in the war, the more effective tank destroyers were P-47s and P-38s equipped with a radio (to communicate with ground troops) and bombs filled with napalm. -
