Skoonj,
I watched the 60 Minutes piece on Michael Caine a couple of weeks ago. He described this role, and said there was a discussion among the producers and director of the film regarding a member of the officer corp of that era speaking with a cockney accent. They were aiming for authenticity in the film, and didn't feel a member of that 'station' would be found in the higher ranks of the British Army. Obviously the issue was resolved. - 1/14/16, 12:07 PM

"Men of Harlech", too.
Read a story about the filming of the movie. Apparently the Zulu tribesmen who played their ancestors didn't really understand what the director wanted them to do in the (numerous) battle scenes. The director showed his Zulu warriors a couple of Westerns with Indian attacks. That conveyed the understanding to the Zulus and filming proceeded. - 1/14/16, 2:29 PM

Sonoboy, They also thought Michael Caine's voice was "effeminate". Maybe they thought that was appropriate for a British officer of his day.

Well, it certainly didn't hurt his chances with the 'birds' in 'Alfie'...

The Man Who Would Be King. And Breaker Morant. Both will compliment this selection.

Tim, The Man Who Would Be King was my favorite film of all time. Caine, Connery, and (Shakira ... Roxanne) Caine.
