I took Spanish first, like a lot of New Yorkers. Later took Russian, which wasn't too easy. Finally, as an adult, I took Farsi. Went to class for many months, and did well, and even did the written language. Now, 30 years later, there is little I can remember. I had been to Iran several times while in the AF, but didn't learn the language till a few years later.

Believe it or not: Afrikaans. Like German in that the principle verb ends the sentence, but Afrik doesn't have that tiresome European fetish for gender-specific pronouns & adjectives, and case-specific nouns. Also fewer pronunciation issues (like French, dear God).
"I lost my hat"
German: Ich habe meinen Hoed verloren
Afrik: Ek het my hoed verloor
French: J'ai perdu mon chapeau
etc
Too bad Afrikaans is a pointless language spoken only by a couple million people worldwide. -

In the Marine Corps we were bilingual. We spoke English and Profanity. The profanity was pretty easy to pick up.
